Cat urine odor may be typical with kittens, kitties that have not yet been potty trained, and elderly felines. When pet pee accidents are left unattended the stench can build and make any room unbearable. This article will outline different ways rid the pungent smell in the room.

NOTE: Urine contains ammonia. Never clean up pet secretions with ammonia-based cleaners. Your pets will recognize that area as a marked territory and continue to pee there.

Do NOT use these products to clean up cat pee

  • Ammonia: Cat and dog urine have ammonia in it, adding more will make the odor stronger. The pets will then continue to seek that spot to discharge their waste matter.
  • Bleach: Apart from being toxic to humans and animals, the bleach will only disinfect the area, it will not remove the urine odor.

  • Vinegar: The antiseptic properties of vinegar are effective at breaking down the urine smell of dogs and cats. However, the problem is you end up replacing one odor for another. If you wish to give this a try, Apple Cider Vinegar has the best scent.

Find all the pee spots

A terrific way to locate all the pee spots in the room is to use a UV flashlight. For best results dim the lights and point the blacklight throughout the entire room. Any place the pet twinkled will glow and be visible to clean.

Cleaning up urine residue

Immediate clean up of cat urine will be your best bet at eliminating the odor. Using paper towels and blotting the urine will prevent spreading it across more surface area. Using an oxygen based cleaner such as hydrogen peroxide will kill the odor-causing bacteria. Mixing baking soda with OxyCean usually does the trick. Another effective method to remove the bad smell of cat pee is using cleaners with enzymes that break down the urine.
