I hate when there are microwave odors in my kitchen. Not only does it stick to the microwave, it seems to permeate the entire home. It seems that only the smells I don’t like are the ones that stick regardless how many times I use it. There are surprisingly easy ways to remove the nasty odors.

Old Grumpy’s Quick Solution

  1. Use 3 teaspoons of white vinegar for 5 minutes
  2. Use 2 tablespoons of baking soda with water for 5 minutes
  3. Peel two oranges or one lemon and place in 2 cups of water for 3 minutes
  4. Place 2 tablespoons of coffee grounds in 1/2 cup of water for 5 minutes

Odor Eliminator Solutions

The best method to remove microwave odors is to use Vinegar. Use 3 teaspoons of white vinegar with water in a microwave-safe bowl. Set the timer for 5 minutes and let the steam soak into the surfaces for 20 minutes. Afterward clean with soap and water.

A fun way to periodically clean the microwave is to use a specialized container. The Angry Mama Steam Cleaner is a little figurine of an angry mama (reminds me of my wife). Steam comes out of mama’s head making it look like she is yelling at you.

Alternatively, you can use the acidic power of citrus to remove odors from your microwave. Peel two oranges or one lemon slice. Place either in a bowl of water with about 2 cups of water. Microwave for 3 minutes while paying attention that the peels do not burn. Leave the fruit inside the for an hour and then wipe the surface with soap and water.

Need a little extra oomph to eliminate the odor? Mix 2 tablespoons of Baking Soda in a bowl of water. Run the microwave for 5 minutes and leave the bowl alone for an hour. Wipe the surfaces with soap and water. Alternatively, you can you wipe by dipping a cloth in the baking soda solution.

Another notable solution is to use coffee bean grounds. Place 2 tablespoons of coffee in a microwave-safe bowl with 1/2 cup of water. Microwave for 5 minutes and then wipe the surfaces with soap and water.
